ITI COPA (Computer Operator & Programming Assistant) – Basic Notes

Topic -Introduction to computer system 

A computer system is an electronic machine that accepts data as input, processes it according to instructions, and produces output.

Basic Functions of a Computer

  1. Input – Takes data from the user

  2. Processing – Works on data using CPU

  3. Output – Gives result to the user

  4. Storage – Saves data for future use

2. Concepts of Hardware and Software

Hardware

Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer that can be seen and touched.

Examples:

Types of Hardware:

  1. Input Devices

  2. Output Devices

  3. Processing Devices

  4. Storage Devices


Software

Software is a set of programs or instructions that tell the computer what to do.

Types of Software:

  1. System Software

    • Controls computer operations

    • Example: Windows, Linux, DOS

  2. Application Software

    • Used by users for specific tasks

    • Example: MS Word, Excel, Paint, Browser


3. Function of Motherboard Components and Various Processors

Motherboard

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer where all components are connected.

Main Components of Motherboard

  1. CPU Socket

    • Holds the processor

  2. RAM Slots

    • Used to install RAM

  3. Chipset

    • Controls data flow between CPU, memory, and devices

  4. BIOS/UEFI Chip

    • Starts the computer (booting process)

  5. Expansion Slots

    • Used for graphics card, sound card, etc.

  6. Power Connector

    • Supplies power to motherboard


Processors (CPU)

The processor is the brain of the computer.

Functions of CPU:

  • Performs calculations

  • Controls all operations

Main Parts of CPU:

  1. ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) – Performs calculations

  2. CU (Control Unit) – Controls operations
